Common Digital Marketing Mistakes
Posted on 24 Nov. 2021
With consistently changing platforms, trends and algorithms, the digital marketing world can sometimes feel like you’re scrambling to keep up. No matter how hard we try to avoid them, mistakes can happen, and at the risk of sounding like your primary school teacher or parents…the most important thing is to learn from them.
We’ve outlined five common digital marketing mistakes we’ve seen across platforms to keep in mind so you can avoid them.
1. Pushing too hard for sales and forgetting about your audience
BUY NOW, CALL TODAY, PICK US. We’re all for self-promotion, but when every post on your social media platform is a heavy sales pitch, it can feel a little overwhelming. Storytelling is a key component in connecting with your audience and building an engaged community. Adopting a ‘customer-centric’ focus means that you can still promote your business or service but ensures that your content is adding value for your audience.
2. Forgetting to optimise
Smart phones, desktops, laptops, iPads…the internet is accessible on so many different types of technology and they don’t all display your content in the same way. Making sure you’re optimising your website, graphic design dimensions, and advertising content is incredibly important - particularly for mobile devices as it affects how people view your content on their screens.
3. Lack of Consistency
It really is key! Has it been a while since you’ve updated your social media profile? Does the look and feel of your posts change with every upload? Not sure what your goals are for digital marketing? Building your brand takes time and ensuring you’re consistent with the design, tone of voice and frequency of marketing activities will help people notice and remember your business.
4. Your website is outdated
The importance of your website as a marketing tool cannot be underestimated. Slow loading times, outdated design, and a difficult to navigate layout are some of the reasons website visitors may not engage with your business. A modern, user friendly and professional website has the power to increase your credibility, showcase your brand, generate sales and so much more.
5. Ignoring your insights
Do you know who your key audience is? Are your marketing activities and online presence reaching or communicating to this audience? Facebook and Instagram offer handy insights to help understand your demographics, audience behaviours and more, so you can measure if your marketing efforts are hitting the mark. Platforms such as Google Analytics are also invaluable for the data they can collect so we always ensure we set up an account for our clients.
Do any of these common mistakes hit a bit close to home? Don’t fret! Improving and optimising your online presence can take time but it is so worth it. As always, the MOM team are here to help so don’t hesitate to get in touch.
