As we bid farewell to summer and welcome the autumn, April stands as a pivotal month in Australia. With its crisp mornings, mild days, and cool evenings, April epitomises the essence of the autumn season in this part of the world. But beyond the changing colours of the leaves, April in Australia offers a tapestry of events, celebrations, and historical significance.

Autumn Splendour and Festivities

In April, the days may be shorter, but they are pleasantly mild, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities. As we transition into autumn, numerous festivals and events dot the calendar, inviting locals and visitors alike to immerse themselves in the cultural tapestry of the country. Keep an eye out for interesting events near you. Try something new, something different, something crazy!

One of the most significant events of April is ANZAC Day, observed on the 25th of the month in both Australia and New Zealand. This day commemorates the courage and sacrifice of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought in World War I, and honours all servicemen and women who have served their countries in times of conflict.

A Month of Diamonds and Delights

April is not only a time of seasonal transition but also a month rich in symbolism and historical significance. The birthstone for April is the diamond, symbolizing strength, endurance, and clarity of thought.

Interesting April Trivia

  • In ancient Roman calendars, April was the second month but later became the fourth with the advent of the new calendar system
  • Named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, April embodies themes of renewal and fertility.

It’s Humour Month

April is humorously dubbed "Humour Month," encouraging everyone to embrace laughter and joy in their lives. Hence April Fools Day! But remember only until midday, and jokes after then you become the ‘fool’.

Astrological Influence

The zodiac signs of Aries (21 March – 19 April) and Taurus (20 April – 20 May) reign over April, each with unique energy and characteristics.

Floral Emblems

The sweet pea and the daisy adorn April as its birth flowers, symbolising purity, innocence, and friendship.

Historical Events in April

Throughout history, April has witnessed pivotal moments that have shaped the world we know today:

  • On April 9, 1959, NASA announced America's first astronauts, marking a significant milestone in space exploration.
  • April 14, 1828, saw the copyright of the first Webster Dictionary by Noah Webster, contributing to the standardization of the English language.
